I had a little trouble with the third portion of the project. Some of the directions were a little confusing.

In the first overlay each factor had the same weight. It seems like that would make it more difficult to find the perfect place to live. In the second overlay they changed the weight of some factors which seemed to give them more options.

Distance

The four pictures above show the distances from the NFRMC and the University of Florida and house values and percentage of people ages 40-49 based on the couples criteria for finding a place to live in Alachua.

Oil Spill Summary

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico occurred on April 20, 2010. Since then it has spread quickly throughout the gulf affecting the coastlines of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle. The animation exercise shows where the oil has spread over time. A graph of the oil spread can be useful in predicting when and where the oil will go next and aiding in cleanup and preventative efforts. For the oil spill animation exercise useful data for graphing this might include the speed at which the oil spreads or travels toward the coast, how many gallons per day, weather conditions in the gulf which could affect the travel rates, and currents. As the oil moves closer to the coast local tide and weather information could help determine how far inland it goes.

Infrastructure at risk from storm surge

MS Coast elevation

This map was my favorite one to work with. Most of the maps I've done used a lot of different symbols and labels where all I had to do was figure out the right size color and shape of the symbols to make the map look good. I really enjoyed playing around with the different colors to make sure everything was visible and easy to look at.
